Describe the main physical and technological resources required in the operation of a selected
organisation.
The organisation I have selected is Villiers High School and I will describe their main physical and
technological resources. Villiers High School is a state school owned by the government. I will also
explain how Villiers manages its resources.
Physical Resources are tangible resources that are needed to maintain the running of a business.
The main physical resource that is available to Villiers High School are the four buildings consisting of
a number of rooms. Nearly all businesses need a fixed space to work from, the amount needed
depends on the business. Villiers High School consists of students from year 7 – year 13 with an
overall of 1200 students. Buildings and facilities helps the performance of students and teachers as
a clean large working environment makes it easier to work in. With better working conditions, the
output from workers and students is likely to be much better. The location of the building could
affect the total number of students attending this school, VHS is located directly opposite homes
within a community. If facilities inside are inadequate, staff members as well as students may not
stay and in result join new schools, which decreases the budget for the school. Classrooms are
essential to student as without them students would struggle to learn as it is a learning facility.
All businesses use materials and produce waste in the day-to-day running of their business. The
amount varies depending on each business. Villiers High School use lots of resources due to students
and staff and in result produce a lot of waste. Students need lots paper and books in order to
complete their work and carry out tasks, however all scrap paper is wasted and is thrown away. VHS
tries to waste as little as possible, they recycle bottles and paper, and these bins are located in every
single room to ensure that it’s not too much hassle for students to recycle.
Equipment including ICT is vital to a school such as Villiers High School for both staff and students.
Staff use ICT equipment such as computers and laptops to store documents and presentation for
students, without these it would be difficult for teachers to teach and would have to result in
ancient teaching methods which is inefficient. ICT is also used to update databases for students, they
are used as real time registers and are recorded on a day to day basis, all information for students
are stored on computers which can be accessed in case of an emergency. Interactive whiteboards
can be used by teachers to help them teach students and it makes it easier as it is visible to the
whole class. Students also need equipment in order to carry out their day-to-day needs within
school. Equipment within science labs are required by students to carry out experiments in order to
attain results. They also need ICT equipment such as Laptops to write up essays or create
presentations, they may also need it to complete ICT coursework.
Villiers High School will use planned maintenance and refurbishment in order to keep the school
running smoothly. It is important for VHS to carry this out or machines which are part of the
infrastructure of the school may break down and cause great problems. Also other machines which
are used by students need to be maintained in order for them to use efficiently and safely.
Maintenance and refurbishment is essential because it allows firms such as schools to make
adjustments and corrections. It keeps the working environment safe and clean in order for staff and
students to work in. A form of maintenance is fixing computers which are not working properly,
once they are all fixed, all students can carry out their work efficiently.
