, Question 1 A Pattern is at the heart of learning mathematics. We construct
mathematical ideas through the identification of patterns and relationships,
which constitute the route to formal algebra. Repeating patterns consist of a
series of related elements, in which each new element relates to the previous
one in some orderly manner. At the Foundation Phase level, we can focus on
both non-numeric and numeric patterns. 1.1 Discuss two reasons why you
should teach patterns in the Foundation Phase. (5) 1.2 Consider the following
patterns to design a learning activity to teach Grade 3 learners. In your
learning activity, the following are important: • Formulate a learning outcome. •
In the presentation stage of your activity, name the category of these patterns
and specify the name of each pattern. 4 • Specify the elements of these
patterns • Explain to the learners how to construct a general statement by
referring one of the patterns. N.B do not copy the general statements that are
in the study guide. (21) 1.3 Illustrate how to teach Grade 2 learners growing
patterns using a number line. (10) (36)
1.1 Reasons to Teach Patterns in the Foundation Phase: a. Cognitive
Development: Teaching patterns in the Foundation Phase helps
develop children's cognitive skills. Recognizing and creating
patterns require observation, comparison, and problem-solving,
which stimulate critical thinking and analytical skills.

b. Preparation for Advanced Mathematics: Patterns are the
foundation of algebraic thinking. Introducing patterns at an early
stage sets a strong groundwork for more advanced mathematical
concepts in the future. It helps students understand the concept of
variables and equations.

1.2 Learning Activity for Grade 3 Learners: Learning Outcome: By
the end of the activity, students will be able to identify, categorize,
and create repeating patterns.

Presentation Stage: Category of Patterns: Repeating Patterns Names
of Patterns:

 Pattern 1: ABAB (e.g., red-blue-red-blue)
 Pattern 2: AABB (e.g., green-green-blue-blue)
 Pattern 3: ABCABC (e.g., circle-square-triangle-circle-square-
triangle)
