CGP Combined Science
Course Summary
PREVIEW MATERIAL
TOPIC 1
Practicals:
- Paper Chromatography
1. Draw a line near the bottom of the sheet of filter paper using a pencil
2. Add a spot of ink to the line and place the sheet in a beaker of the solvent
3. Make sure the ink isn't touching the solvent so that it doesn’t dissolve
4. The solvent will seep up the paper and carry the ink with it
5. Each different dye in the ink will move up the paper at a different rate,
separating them.
6. Any insoluble dyes will stay at the bottom on the line
7. Once the solvent has reached the top of the paper, remove it from the beaker
and allow it to dry
8. The result is a chromatogram.
- Separation Techniques
1. Crystallisation
2. Distillation
3. Evaporation
4. Filtration
- Distillation
1. Heat the solution. The part with the lowest boiling point will evaporate
2. The vapour is then cooled, condensed (turns back into a liquid) through a
chilled tube and collected in a separate flask.
