Unit 13 – D2 – Evaluate your experience of planning and participating in the
recruitment and selection process
Introduction
For this task, I am going to critically evaluate on my experience of the planning stages of the
interview, and evaluate on my experience of participating in the recruitment and selection
process. This will include evaluations on the preparation for the interview (pre-interview),
the interview itself, and post-interview.
Pre-interview
Before the interview, I didn’t prepare any smart/formal clothes to wear to the interview
(e.g. a shirt and tie). If I did, it would make a better first impression on the interviewers,
making it more likely for them to hire me as I would be more presentable. Also, as an
interviewer, wearing formal clothes would make me seem more professional, showing the
interviewee that it is the interviewer who holds the power, and that they shouldn’t be too
relaxed in the interview. Another improvement I would have made if given the chance is my
handwriting on the application form. Having neater handwriting would make it easier to
read, and employers may take it more seriously. Because my handwriting is similar to a
child’s handwriting, they may not have taken my application into consideration (possibly
due to not being able to read some of the information). As an interviewer, an improvement
that I would make if able to would be to get more contribution from the whole group to
make the interview questions. Doing this would create a more diverse range of questions
from different personalities, preventing interview bias. This is important, as it makes it more
likely for the right candidate to be hired, rather than a particular type of candidate that is
seen from one interviewer’s perspective. Another improvement I would make if I did this
again would be to make the selection criteria more detailed. Making this more detailed
would also make it more likely for the right candidate to be hired, as a more detailed
selection criteria would help sift out the less suitable candidates and help to choose a
suitable candidate more specifically. One thing that went well pre-interview was that I
prepared for the interview well, as I researched what questions may come up and produced
satisfying answers to those questions. Another thing that went well in the planning stages of
the process was the team’s effort into creating the recruitment documents, as we all
participated into making specific documents (one person made the person specification,
one person made the job advert, one person made the job description etc.)
One thing I learned from others in my group was what information should be included in the
job advert and job description. They are both very similar, but the job description is more
detailed as it has more information about the job than the job advert. Something I learned
from other groups is that wearing formal clothes does help in looking more professional,
giving the candidate an advantage during the interview as it makes a good first impression.
