Introduction Geo-Information Sciences (GRS-10306)
REAL WORLD  GIS
A geographic information system is a computer system for capturing, storing, querying (and modelling),
analyzing (for example in time) and displaying geospatial data. Geospatial data describes both the
location and characteristics of spatial features.

A GIS requires the following components besides geospatial data:

 Hardware ---- Windows
 Software ---- Python
 People ---- experts
 Infrastructure ---- general organizational patterns
 Procedures

Since its inception in the early 1960s GIS has been important in many fields for making decisions. Some
examples are cartography, geography, computer science and land surveying and geodesy.

According to Chang the right procedure is:

Every systems consists of different layers which store different types of information, i.e. ownership or
natural resources. Putting these on top of each other gives a GIS.

We have to describe reality in three dimensions: what (thematic), where (geographic) and when
(temporal). It’s not generic, but affected by who you are and what you want to use the model for.
Spatial modeling goes in 4 steps:

1. Spatial perception
 Depends on the person and the goals
