TOPICS COVERED
Describe the population characteristics
KEY TERMS
Species: A group of organisms of the same species, capable of interbreeding and
producing fertile offspring.
Population: A group of organisms of the same species, living in the same area at the
same time.
Community: A group of different populations living in a particular area.
Habitat: The specific area where a plant or animal completes its lifecycle (growth,
reproduction, and eventual death).
Environment: The biotic (living), abiotic (non-living), and external factors surrounding
an organism, and influencing its development and survival.
Ecosystem: Multiple animal and plant communities, and non-living parts of an
ecosystem interacting with each other.
Population size: The number of individuals in a population.
Population density: The number of individuals per unit area or volume, e.g. the
number of weeds per square metre.
Carrying capacity: The maximum number of individuals of a species that an
ecosystem can support over an indefinite period of time.
Module 25: population ecology 1
, Density-dependent factors: Factors that have a direct correlation (relationship) to the
size of the population in a given area. The greater the size of the population in the
given area, the greater the influence of these factors.
Density-independent factors: Factors that exert an influence on a population
regardless of its size in a given area.
NOTES
Population
A population refers to a specific group of organisms.
All individuals in a population belong to the same species.
Individuals in a population occupy a defined area, at a defined time. Usually,
the defined area is a physical space, but in the case of UCT Online High School
students, the space is virtual.
Individuals in a population can s uccessfully reproduce/ interbreed freely, to
produce fertile offspring.
Since individuals of a population belong to the same species, they
can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Population Size
Population size - The number of individuals of a population
present in a defined area.
locating all individuals during a census is nearly impossible.
variety of indirect counting methods are used to determine population size.
Population Density
Population density - The size of a population relative
to the amount of space it occupies
Population density is usually expressed as the number of individuals per unit
area or volume.
