Advanced Nursing Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing
Advanced nursing practice and advanced practice nursing are two terms that are easily
misinterpreted. Advanced nursing practice encompasses advanced practice nursing; however, the
two terms are not interchangeable. The process for becoming an advanced practice nurse
involves specific licensure, accreditation, certification, and education. These requirements can
differ from state to state. It is important to understand these components in their entirety to
accurately utilize the verbiage of advanced practice nurse.
Advanced nursing practice is better described as the core concepts and education
foundation for all advanced practice nurses. The clinical skill sets of each advanced nursing
practice role may vary, but they share common concepts that define them as advanced nursing
practice. These core concepts include a graduate education, appropriate certification, and a
clinical practice that is focused on the patient and their family (Arslanian-Engoren, 2019). These
concepts can be additionally broken down into more detailed concepts including leadership,
clinical practice, coaching, decision making, and collaboration (Furlong & Smith, 2005). All
advanced practice nursing roles share these core concepts as a foundation for their nursing
practice. Although the concept of advanced nursing practice has been defined there continues to
be confusion with the term advanced practice nurse. It is important that these definitions
continue to be clarified to uphold the integrity of both advanced nursing practice and advanced
practice nursing. It is also important to stress that advanced practice nursing should not be
considered the junior practice of medicine, but rather an extension of nursing practice that
provides more comprehensive and detailed care for patients and their families (Hamric & Tracy,
2019).
