Ahmed: Social learning theory can be used to encourage and teach desirable behaviours in
the school through the use of positive reinforcement and rewards. Teachers can use sims to
give Ahmed rewards after he eats.
In the school setting there may be a sims system that all teachers can access and learn
about ahmed and deal with his problems
Sarah: Hospitals can plan a health promotion program based on the Social Learning Theory
which includes an assessment of personal and environmental factors that influence
behaviour. Hospitals can train employees to make behavioural change in their patients,
doing things like setting goals, raising awareness of the problem. They can also encourage
positive behaviour with positive rewards such as more free time outside.
Humanistic:
Ahmed: Ahmed’s school can have a school counselling facility where Ahmed can go when
he feels he wants to express himself or when he feels depressed. Choice is central to
humanistic learning theory, choice lets Ahmed to take control of what he wants to do. The
school can give Ahmed a pass which he can choose to use when he wants to go to the
counselling room or when he wants to be in a quiet area.
Sarah: Carl Rogers established the humanistic viewpoint, according to which people have an
innate desire to self improve. The hospital can provide Sarah with client-centred therapy, and
the therapist can establish a strong relationship with her where they don't impose their own
opinions and let Sarah form her own. This could enhance Sarah's personal development and
independence.
Comparison:
Ahmed’s school applies to the social learning theory by using positive reinforcement it
encourages positive behaviour both verbally and also by rewarding positive points, rewards
trip or even positive phone call home this boosts Ahmed’s self-esteem and encourages him
to carry on the good behaviour. In contrast at Sarah’s psychiatric hospital nurses use
positive reinforcement verbally or allowing patients to have extra time outside however this
could be viewed as patronising. In conclusion the social learning perspective can be applied
more effectively to a school setting because operant conditioning can form a rewards policy
in order to influence Ahmed’s behaviour. Whereas in a hospital setting it is more difficult to
apply the social learning behaviour as it would be seen as patronising and it is more difficult
to change the behaviour of an adult suffering from depression.
By utilising client-centred therapy, the hospital promotes a humanistic perspective and
encourages Sarah to express her emotions more. The use of unconditional positive regard
by the therapist, who accepts Sarah for who she is and even when she may make mistakes,
teaches Sarah that making mistakes is acceptable and promotes personal development.
Whereas providing Ahmed with a quiet space at his school could have a detrimental effect
because all of his negative thoughts could mislead him and cause his eating disorder to
worsen.
