Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

B.P3: Explain how to incorporate ethical principles into the provision of support for
individuals with different needs

Ethics is the study of how people interact with one another and the environment.
the methodical investigation of human attitudes and behaviours. Ethics involves
thoroughly examining the principles that actually govern our attitudes and actions in a
certain way. It focuses on investigating what values should direct our attitudes and
behaviours in various settings. Ethics need to be met for each individual in a professional
setting, for instance, a patient could refuse a specific treatment because of their cultural or
religious beliefs, so the healthcare professional should make a care plan which is suitable
and in the best interests of the service user. (https://www.nshen.ca) Sometimes
challenging choices about medical treatments that incorporate moral values, religious
views, or professional guidelines must be made by patients, families, and healthcare
professionals. In order to meet individual needs using ethics health professionals need to
consider choice which is available to all staff and patients. Health professionals should also
use independence; this would promote empowerment to the service user. Conflict of
interest; this interest service users whose needs are paramount and health professionals
should follow confidentiality to make sure everyone is safe guarded.

There are four different ethical principles, the first one is autonomy. Autonomy in
healthcare refers to the patient's freedom to remain in charge of their body both during
and after treatment. Second ethical principle is Beneficence which means acting with
kindness or mercy. Any healthcare professional's activities should always be positive
towards the service user. Third is non-maleficence, In order to practise non-maleficence, a
healthcare worker must not cause injury. All healthcare professionals are required to
thoroughly assess each scenario before making judgments. Every healthcare practitioner
has a responsibility to be aware of how each of their actions may affect others, whether
they do so deliberately or unknowingly. Decisions can be harmful to patients, the
community, or even fellow healthcare professionals. The last ethical principle is justice.
According to the justice principle, all medical decisions should be fair. For instance,
regardless of their circumstances, people need access to advanced health care. Patients
have frequently been denied the essential care because of their socioeconomic background,
race, sexual orientation, etc. (https://clipboardhealth.com)

Core principles used by health professionals are used to treat clients ethically. The core
principles used by health professionals are:

● Managing conflicts with service users, carers, families or colleagues
● Managing conflicts of interests

● Balancing services and resources
● Maintaining confidentiality

Managing conflicts with service users, carers, families or colleagues is crucial because
conflict arises for a variety of causes, including disagreements over medical decisions,
worries about the standard or expense of care, or staff behaviour. Because they feel poorly
or are worried about a friend or relative, people may be less emotionally in control and
more judgmental than normal. Conflicts can also occur when colleagues make different
decisions.

Care providers occasionally encounter conflicts of interest when working with vulnerable
individuals in health and social care settings. In these situations, they must come up with
an ethical solution. There is frequently no right response to an ethical dilemma; instead, the
answer depends on a combination of factors.

Questions have been made about how health and social care services should be provided
due to a lack of money. Due to an ageing population, rising demands, and pricey medical
advances, funding pressures are still increasing. As a result, in some circumstances, moral
judgments must be formed (by people such as hospital boards).

All Health and social care services and their staff have a responsibility of confidentiality to
the service users, they provide to guarantee that no private information is disclosed
without the service users knowledge or consent. Maintaining confidentiality safeguards
service users as well. For instance, if a staff member uploads a picture of someone in a
shelter for domestic abuse victims on social media, the abusive partner might be able to
track down the victim.

B.M3: Analyse how an ethical approach to providing support would benefit specific
individuals with different needs

It is crucial that professionals provide Tremayne with care that follows an ethical
decision-making process. Giving him all the information he requires so he may decide for
himself whether to live alone or in an assisted living facility and what he wants to eat. It's
critical to provide people the freedom to choose their own actions so they feel in charge of
their treatment, care, and lives.

In the four ethical principles, one of which is autonomy, which aims to support Billy's
independence and freedom of choice. This would involve him making his own decisions
about his care or treatment, which could help him become a more independent person who
can make decisions for himself. Everyone, including Billy, is entitled to freedom, which
