A tracheostomy is a surgical incision into the trachea for the purpose of establishing an airway. It can be temporary or permanent depending on the ability of the patient to breath independently. Why is there a cuff at the distal end of the trach tube? - ANSWER-The cuff is inflated in order to maintain a seal and to allow for the complete mechanical respirations. When the cuff is properly inflated, the patient is unable to speak. What is Obturator? - ANSWER-It is an instrument used to make the insertion of the trach easier. It is taken out of the stoma imediately after the trach is secured, because the patient is unable to breath while the obturator is in. Usually, an inner canual is placed on the place of the obturator. When suctioning pt. on a cardiac monitor and arrhythmia starts, what is appropriate nursing intervention? - ANSWER-Stop succtioning and assess arrhythmia. Notify the RN or MD. Make sure patient has patent airway first.
