Summary case
Nike asked to organize a conference for them within the next weeks. They also give the opportunity
to join the bidding process for a public event. To organize these new events, they extended the team
and changed the organizational structure. In the next internal team meetings all teams are asked to
present their team name, their passion and spirit in a persuasive team presentation of 3 minutes per
team. In this meeting it’s also important to focus on the project planning focus and give a visual

Question 1: Project management
Bowdin, Allen, O’Toole, Harris & McDonell (2006, p.266) say that events and festivals are kind of a
response to constantly changing business and cultural environment. With project management it’s
important to manage a product in response at the changing nature of modern business. Bowdin et al.
define an event as being used to launch new products. New conferences are used to educate the
new market. New festivals are used to reposition the town in the marketplace.
According to Gary and Larson (2000, p.4) a project is a complex non-routine one-time effort limited
by time, budget, resources and performance specifications designed to meet customer needs.
According to this definition, events and festivals are projects. The project management of events
concentrates on the management process to create the event, not just what happens at the event.
According to PMI (n.d.) project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and
techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.
According to Verhaar (2014) management needs to direct all kinds of processes within an
organisation. Examples of processes are production process, communication process and
collaborations Within project management a manger needs to direct within a (temporary)
organisation. The characteristic of project management is that it’s a systematic and integral control
of the development process of a creative idea (or assignment) to a product or result.
Four definitions about project management and not all the same. Bowdin Et al. definition is more
focused on the markets there are (conference, business, etc.). Gary and Larson say that A project
management of events focus on the management process to create the event. This is also said in the
definition of Verhaar. PMI adds it in a more keyword stated way.
