1.1 The “Sustainable Development Goals” adopted by the United Nations
Member states in 2015
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a
set of 17 interconnected goals that were adopted by the United Nations (UN)
member states in September 2015 (United Nations 2021). These goals are part of
the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global commitment to address a
wide range of social, economic, and environmental challenges by the year 2030
(United Nations 2021). The SDGs build upon the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) and provide a comprehensive framework for sustainable development on a
global scale (United Nations 2021).
1.2 The 17 Sustainable Development Goals
The 17 SDGs are as follows:
1. No Poverty: End poverty in all its forms everywhere (United Nations).
2. Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and
promote sustainable agriculture (United Nations).
3. Good Health and Well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all
at all ages (United Nations).
4. Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote
lifelong learning opportunities for all (United Nations).
5. Gender Equality: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
(United Nations).
6. Clean Water and Sanitation: Ensure availability and sustainable management of
water and sanitation for all (United Nations).
