Structure of genetic material
DNA
Stands for deoxyribonucleic acid.
Found in the nucleus and contains genetic information.
A DNA molecule is a double helix with two polynucleotide chains
held together by hydrogen bonds between specific complementary
base pairs.
DNA is a polymer of Nucleotides = Pentose.
RNA - ribonucleic acid transfers genetic information from DNA to
the ribosomes.
Chromosomes
The structure made of DNA that codes for all the characteristics of an
organism.
Each section of a chromosome that contains the code for the production
of a particular protein is called a gene.
DNA copies itself, then coils and condenses to form the chromosomes
that we see under microscopes.
Each human body cell contains 46 chromosomes. These can be arranged
into 23 pairs.
Female = XX Male = XY
Genes
A gene is a small section of DNA in a chromosome. Each gene codes
for a particular sequence of amino acids in order to make a specific
protein.
