To introduce the first conditional for the function of talking about events that
are likely to happen using ‘if’ and ‘will’
Lesson Type: Grammar Lesson Aims: To provide controlled and freer practice of the first conditional in this
function.


 During the warmer, students will learn form and function of the
first conditional through presentation in a clear context.
 Students will demonstrate understanding through completion of
A2 (Late elementary/ controlled activities (for accuracy) and freer practice activities (for
Level of Class: pre-intermediate) Lesson Objectives: fluency).
Teenagers (14-16 years old)  To successfully use “if” and “will” to talk about events that are
likely to happen (first conditional)



Students would already know present simple, present continuous, past
simple for common verbs, and would be familiar with will for future events.
Nationality/First They would be familiar with grammatical terminology such as the names of
Spanish Assumed Knowledge:
Language: the tenses they already know, subject, auxiliary verb, negative form, etc.


 Students are monolingual and therefore may prefer to speak in L1
(Spanish).
Solution: I will divert student attention back to English.

Solution: I will provide controlled practice activities to ensure
they practice combining the “if” clause with the main clause in
a sentence correctly.
 Students may use “when” instead of “if” in the “if” clause.
Solution: I will explain that “when” is used when referring to events
that are certain to happen, while “if” is used to refer to events that
may happen, but it is not certain that the events will happen.

 2 handouts for each student: 1 controlled practice worksheet, 1
freer practice worksheet (24 handouts in total)
