QUESTION 1

The following questions refer to the South African curriculum policy documents of the
that provide the relevant assessment guidelines for each phase, grade and subject.

You need to first indicate the phase, grade and subject you will be referring to throughout
your responses in this question before attempting to answer this question.

1.1 Identify and provide any five specific aims/purposes for your subject according to
CAPS. (5x1=5)

Phase: FET Phase
Grade: 12
Subject: Mathematics

CAPS curriculum for Grade 12 Mathematics

Specific aims/purposes for Mathematics according to CAPS:

1. To develop fluency in computation skills without relying on the usage of calculators.

2. Mathematical modeling is an important focal point of the curriculum. Real life
problems should be incorporated into all sections whenever appropriate. Examples
used should be realistic and not contrived. Contextual problems should include
issues relating to health, social, economic, cultural, scientific, political and
environmental issues whenever possible.

3. To provide the opportunity to develop in learners the ability to be methodical, to
generalize, make conjectures and try to justify or prove them.

4. To be able to understand and work with number system.

5. To show Mathematics as a human creation by including the history of Mathematics.

6. To promote accessibility of Mathematical content to all learners. It could be
achieved by catering for learners with different needs.

1

, 7. To develop problem-solving and cognitive skills. Teaching should not be limited to
“how” but should rather feature the “when” and “why” of problem types. Learning
procedures and proofs without a good understanding of why they are important will
leave learners ill-equipped to use their knowledge in later life.

8. To prepare the learners for further education and training as well as the world of
work.

1.2 List 5 topics in term 2 that must be taught and assessed in the grade and subject you
have indicated. (5x1=5)

a. Trigonometry
b. Functions: polynomials
c. Differential Calculus
d. Analytical Geometry
e. Statistics (regression and correlation)
f. Counting and probability

1.3 Define the concept ‘assessment’ in your subject, according to CAPS. (5x1=5)

Assessment is a continuous planned process of identifying, gathering and interpreting
information about the performance of learners, using various forms of assessment.

It involves four steps:

 Generating and collecting evidence of achievement;
 Evaluating this evidence;
 Recording the findings and using this information to understand and
 Assist in the learner’s development to improve the process of learning and teaching.

Assessment should be both informal (Assessment for Learning) and formal (Assessment of
Learning). In both cases regular feedback should be provided to learners to enhance the
learning experience.
