Question 1

 Phase: Senior Secondary

 Grade: 12

 Subject: Mathematics

1.1 five specific aims/purposes for Mathematics according to CAPS: *To develop learners'
mathematical literacy and numeracy skills. * To enable learners to solve mathematical problems
in a variety of contexts. * To develop learners' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. * To
develop learners' creativity and innovation skills. * To prepare learners for further study and
employment.

1.2 Here are five topics in Term 2 that must be taught and assessed in Mathematics Grade 12: *
Functions * Trigonometry * Calculus * Linear Algebra * Statistics

1.3 The concept of ‘assessment’ in Mathematics, according to CAPS, is the process of gathering
information about learners' progress in order to make informed decisions about their learning.
Assessment should be ongoing and should be used to inform teaching and learning.

1.4 The steps involved in assessment according to CAPS are: 1. Plan the assessment. 2. Gather
information about learners' progress. 3. Interpret the information gathered. 4. Make decisions about
learners' learning. 5. Provide feedback to learners.

1.5.1 The principle of "active and critical learning" encourages learners to be engaged in their own
learning and to think critically about the material they are learning. This is in contrast to rote
learning, where learners simply memorize information without understanding it.

1.5.2 A teacher can attain the principle of "active and critical learning" in a lesson by using a variety
of teaching methods that encourage learners to participate actively in the learning process. For
example, the teacher could use group work, problem-solving activities, and discussions. The teacher
could also give learners opportunities to reflect on their learning and to make connections between
the material they are learning and their own lives.

Question 2

2.1 Here are the differences between the three concepts of school-based assessment, practical
assessment tasks, and end-of-year examinations, as defined in the NPA:

 School-based assessment is ongoing assessment that is conducted by the teacher
throughout the year. It can include a variety of activities, such as tests, quizzes, projects, and
presentations.

 Practical assessment tasks are assessments that require learners to apply their knowledge
and skills in a practical setting. They can include activities such as experiments,
demonstrations, and fieldwork.

 End-of-year examinations are summative assessments that are conducted at the end of the
year. They are usually used to determine learners' final grades.

2.2 Here are the weights in percentages for tasks done during the year and the end-of-year
examinations for Mathematics Grade 12:

 Phase and grade: Senior Secondary, Grade 12
