Unit 16
P4

It is vital for the business John Lewis that all of their staff works how they are supposed to by
complying with the rules and having good working relationships with other members of staff. If the
staff are working as they are required too then it will mean the company will run as efficiently as
they can and will be overall more successful.

John Lewis has different techniques that they use within their business to make sure that employees
are working in their standards and rules:

Team meeting that would be held weekly: These meetings will take in every store throughout the
organisation. The meetings will have managers and team leaders joined together to talk about their
opinions and views and speak for the people below them in the hierarchy. The meetings are put in
place to try and prevent staff from not being happy in their jobs, to deal with any conflict and to deal
with problems that they have came across. By having these meetings it ensures that the staff are all
happy and working efficiently meaning that the company will do better overall.

Comment Box: This would be a box located in the store that all of the staff can access and put their
opinions and comments on the business into. John Lewis has these boxes set up so that staff can
voice themselves instead of their member of the team voicing them. They are very useful for the
business as it helps them see what their staff would like improving and any ideas they could use. It is
useful for the employees as they are made anonymously which would encourage staff to speak up
about their problems and improve the problems that they had.

Team building exercises: These are set up throughout John Lewis’s stores to enable staff to come
together and to help them form positive working relationships with each other. This would be done
in a set period of time and would be organised by management, it is where staff all go out together
and will have to work together as a team to get a task done and will need to learn to be able to trust
each other in order to get tasks completed. This would benefit the staff of the company as they
would have a better chance of getting to know each other in an environment which isn’t as
professional and strict and to be able to feel valued and learn how to work as a team. It would also
be good for the organisation as it would mean there would be less conflict within the business and
the team work would be better meaning that more work would be completed, making the business
overall more efficient.

Investors in people’s awards: This is an organisation which works with businesses to be able to offer
their advice on how to improve the business and how it is ran. This organisation will help a wide
range of businesses in size and sectors. John Lewis works with this organisation to be able to better
their business.

Job enrichment: This is where John Lewis would give a wider amount of responsibility to their
members of staff; they would give them a bigger workload and a range of tasks that they need to
complete. By doing this for their staff then they may feel like they are more valued and of
importance to the business. This would benefit the staff as they would be happier overall in their
jobs and would have more satisfaction by going to work. This would benefit the organisation as it
would mean their staff would be more motivated in their jobs and would produce more work to a
higher standard as they would have higher job satisfaction and would not want to let management
