Write a narrative account analysing the key
events of the Detente. (1970s)
The Cuban missile crisis and naval blockade had
been the closest point in history to a nuclear war.
This was shown by the US announcing a DEFCON
2 which was the highest level of defence
measures that had ever been taken. This shows
how serious the threat of war was at this point in
time. The countries fortunately managed to
resolve this and decided not to go to war after the
naval blockade. This led to a period of easing of
tensions between them which was known as
Détente, many summits happened and treaties
and agreements such as the INF treaty (which
reduced the spread of nuclear weapons) were
signed, one of these was SALT one.
