GCSE HISTORY NARRATIVE ESSAY QUESTION
EXAMPLE AND FULL ESSAY ANSWER

SUBJECT: GCSE HISTORY
TOPIC: THE COLD WAR- Hungarian Uprising
EXAM BOARD: EDEXCEL

Write a narrative account analysing the key
events of the Hungarian Uprising. (1956)

Hungary was a puppet state of Russia and was
controlled by Stalin, this meant that the living
conditions there were very poor. Hungarians were
forced to work long hours and paid very low
wages. They had no free will due to policies such
as censorship and Stalin was often compared to
the Nazi dictator- Hitler. The unpopular leadership
of Rakosi (a Stalinist) also meant that religion
could not be practised freely and this was upheld
by the AVO- the hated and feared secret police in
Hungary. This led to Hungarians being unhappy
with the leadership.

In 1953, Stalin died and was replaced by
Khrushchev. Khrushchev made a secret speech
criticizing Stalin’s rule and denouncing it.
