Sacred Texts
The word Sacred is considered to be holy and deserving respect,
especially because it has a connection with God.
● The Guru Granth Sahib is a compilation of many hymns, poems and other
writings from many different scholars including Gurus, Hindu and Muslim
writers.
● The Guru Granth Sahib is not just the holy scripture of sikhism, it is also
considered as the living Guru.
● Before Guru Gobind Singh died, he declared that there would be no more Gurus
after him and The Guru Granth Sahib would be the eternal Guru. It contains the
words spoken by the Gurus. This is known as Gurbani, which means words from
the ‘ Guru’s mouth.’
● The Guru Granth Sahib is considered as the God’s words. It is written in Gurmukh.
● The Guru Granth sahib is placed in the prayer hall within the Gurdwara.
● As the guru Granth Sahib is written in Gurmukhi which is considered as God’s
words, it is treated with as much respect as a human would get.
● The first part of the Guru Granth Sahib is the mool mantra. This is the statement
of belief for sikhism. It outlines the belief in only one god.
● The Quran is the holy book for Muslims. It was revealed in stages to Prophet
Muhammad over 23 years.
● The Word Quran means recitation.
● Translations of the Qur'an exist in over 40 languages but Muslims
, are still taught to learn and recite it in Arabic, even if this is not their native
language and they cannot converse in it.
● Committing the Quran to memory acted as a great aid for Allah’s preservation
and anyone who is able to accomplish this is called a Hafiz.
● One way in which christians believe that God’s authority is revealed is through
the Bible.
● Many christians see the bible as the first authority that they should turn to but
there are a range of other influences on them.
● God is the ultimate source of authority and the Bible is believed to be the word of
God.
● Here is what the Bible says about itself;
‘All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to
God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy chapter 3 verses 16-17.
This verse is saying that all the scriptures in the Bible are inspired by God. There
isn’t one single way to understand the Bible – different Christians read it and
think about it in different ways.
● The Bible contains different types of literature such as stories, poems, narrative,
laws and prophecies.
