Drug and Alcohol Use
More than 20 million adults and adolescents in the United States have had a substance use
disorder in the past year. Healthy People 2030 focuses on preventing drug and alcohol misuse
and helping people with substance use disorders get the treatment they need (Lipari (2017).
Substance use disorders revolve around illicit drugs, prescription drugs, or alcohol. Opioid use
disorders have become increasingly problematic in recent years. Substance use disorders have
been linked to overdoses that lead to emergency department visits and deaths. Effective
treatments for substance use disorders are available, but very few people get the treatment they
need. Strategies to prevent substance use is helping get treatment can reduce drug and alcohol
misuse, related health problems, and deaths.
Patient Scenario
Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder are on the rise. Researchers found that more studies are
needed to look at interventions to reduce adverse outcomes and manage opioid use in older
adults. Daily clients come in seeking assistance for either previous or active substance abuse. I
can recall client S. Torres who experience the loss of her father in the summer of 2022.S. Torres
is 35yrs female G2P2 with a history active substance abuse, obsess, dermatitis breakout flare
ups, depression, actively experience mental and emotional abuse from her biological mother,
feeling of isolation from her 16-year daughter and lack appreciation from her long-term partner.
Ms. S. Torres fell into a spiraled of deep depression which led her to want to feel numb from the
pain of the loss of her father. She already has an active marijuana daily use to already numb the
pain she felt consumed with from her existing trauma and internal demons.
