Workers
- Historically Labour is known a s the party of the workers
- When elected in 1997 people thought their long connection with trade unions
would make them more sympathetic to their concerns
- Decline of trade union membership fell from 29% to 26%
- Labour did not reapeal the previous Conservative laws against trade unions
introduced between 1979-1997 which was also surprising
- Labour was openly critical about strike actions by trade unions
- New Labour preferred to emphasise its pro-business attitude
- Some trade Unions were also extremely critical of the Labour government for
continuing policies such as outsourcing and PFI - introduced by the Conservatives
- Labour did not reverse privatisations of the 1980s and 1990s, it extended them
- Ait Traffic Control Organisation (ATCO) sold off, London Underground moved to
public-private partnership and discussions about selling off Royal Mail
- Labour Opted back into European social Chapter
- Employees allowed to request 3 months of unpaid parental leave to take care of
any child below 8yo
- New Labour welcomed globalisation: the process by which the world is
increasingly economically and culturally inter-connected; it was accelerated from the
1990s by the internet and better transportation
- Emphasis on supporting people into work through the New Deal programme -
targetting certain groups
- Introduction of the National Minimum Wage in 1998
