John Bowlby came up with the attachment theory, attachment is bonding with
someone else. He states that there are three types of attachment;
• Secure attachment
This is where children may greet their parents with positive emotions such as
happiness and joy, this then goes on to develop their personality traits. This
type of attachment could have a positive impact on their relationships later in
life as they wouldn’t require things like reassurance they are more emotionally
resilient and independent so in a relationship for example they wouldn’t need
to rely on their significant other for things like happiness.
• Anxious attachment
This type of attachment where children may have unpredictable parents, for
example they could be loving towards their child one day and the next they
might not be around. This could lead to those children growing up and having
this anxious attachment within any relationships they have. This could then
have negative impacts on the way they bond as it may be a lot to handle for
the other partner in the relationship and they may always have to provide
them with reassurance. By having this type of attachment you would not be
emotionally resilient as you never really know what will happen and therefore
when something bad does occur you won’t be able to deal with it in a mature
way.
• Avoidant attachment
This is where children may avoid their parents at a young age which would
then mean that in later life this would be most likely to affect their
relationships and how they bond with others. They may find it harder to form
relationships as well as friendships. They would

relationship towards others and are more likely to be resilient to catastrophes
as they grow and develop. He then said that the children who are not able to
bond are more likely to form either an anxious or avoidant attachment
towards others who are more likely to worry and become more dependent on

In this particular case study Nusrat may have secure attachment type. This can
be seen as her mother is her full time career so therefore she may rely on her
and show positive emotions whenever she encounters her. This may mean that
as she has developed a secure attachment type she is able to trust others and
therefore when she goes to the community centre she is then able to trust
those volunteer and staff. In this case study Nusrat may also be emotionally
resilient due to her secure attachment type therefore if anything bad was to
happen, for example one day she wasn’t allowed to take part in the dance at
the community centre due to her epilepsy then she wouldn’t mind as she is
emotionally resilient.
Alice Fernandez:
In this Case study there is two possible types of attachments that could have
occurred. One may be that she may have had a secure attachment type, this
could have been with her husband and therefore when he passed away she
would have been devastated and this would have then increased her drinking
problem. The other type of attachment is anxious attachment type and this
may be what she has now. This could have been due to the loss of her husband
as well as the fact that people have made comments about her and the way
she smells. Therefore depending on which attachment type she may have she
would wither be emotionally resilient or not, in this particular case she may
not be due to the fact that her drinking problem worsened once her husband
passed therefore she may have dealt with it in a bad way.

Maria may have a secure attachment to her mother or the other way round as
she is her carer and therefore has been with her all her life and therefore may
never have been apart. This may be due to the fact that her mother now relies
on her to help her on a daily basis to do things like help her several time in the
night as well as help her to translate due to her only being able to speak
Italian. Therefore her mother may be emotionally resilient as she has a secure
attachment type, however this may not apply for Maria herself. This is because
she is already rundown and as her mother is old and has dementia she may
already be anxious.
