Principles of Visual Communication Test Questions With Answers What this exam covers - ANSWER This exam covers graphic design, typography, cartoons, motion pictures, photography, computer generated images, and stereotypes in video games. Graphic Design - ANSWER The art of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, books, etc. 1. Design refers to the purposeful arrangement of objects on a page or screen. 2. Designers use visual cues, placement, size, and contrast in specific ways to bring the viewer into the space. 3. When we talk about design, there are principles which can be used to increase a viewer's interaction with the message we are trying to convey. 4. The first rule of thumb in design is based on the concept of "LESS is MORE." Composition in Design - ANSWER Refers to the arrangement of visual elements on a defined space such as page, canvas, poster or screen. Design Principles - ANSWER Principle of design are rules that describe how designers might put together various design elements to create an aesthetic finished product. In this class we explored principles of design such as emphasis, balance, contrast, color, proportion, and perspective. Emphasis - ANSWER Emphasis is also called the central focal point of a design -- an element that, by intention, creates a concentration on the most important element of the design done so causes the viewer's attention to him. Emphasis and visual hierarchy in a design are what the designer or artist feels are the most steps in creating an expressive work be it a logo, advertisement, poster, photograph or film. Visual Hierarchy - ANSWER Refers to using design techniques to carry the viewer's eye from one component to the next; helps the audience process information in design and what is most important. Visual Hierarchy is a term associated with the order in which elements are positioned or arranged in a frame to capture the viewer's attention. This can be achieved through the size, proximity, color, and contrast of elements in a frame. Balance in Design - ANSWER Balance refers to the visual weight of lights and darks, shapes and lines in an image. There are two types of balance: symmetrical and axial. Symmetrical balance in a design is more formal and orderly where the visual weight of the objects in the frame is distributed equally throughout. Axial balance may be more informal and dynamic. Axial balance demands a lot of eye movement, especially when the visual weight is placed more toward one side of the design - left or right side, up or down). Another term of axial balance is asymmetrical balance. Proportion - ANSWER Proportion, also called the golden section, refers to the relative size and scale of the various objects in a design. Proportion suggests there is a relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole. In this example, proportion can be described as the relationship between 1/3 is to 2/3 as 2/3 is to the whole or 1. Color in Design - ANSWER Color is a formal element of design involving visual, biological, and symbolic effects. Color evokes emotion in a design - red lips = passion and sex appeal, blue sky = clarity and open space, black and red = ideological tensions. RGB The primary colors Red, Green and Blue provide the building blocks for variations on the primaries such as secondary (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK). Anything you see on a screen uses the color space of RGB. Anything in print (posters, magazine, business cards or brochures) use the CMYK color space. Evaluating Color - ANSWER Objective, Subjective, Compartive Evaluating color can be objective (we can accurately measure the wave lengths of the light frequencies in terms of temperature), subjective (what the colors means for individuals - blue is for baby blues and pink for baby girls) Red is hot - Blue is cool) These are subject social constructions as is the third evaluative category, comparative color) Comparative color is when we describe a color in relationship to something else such as fire engine red or robin'e egg blue.
