Categories of Nonviolent Direct Action In 2020, the United States has been a hot zone for ongoing civil unrest comprising riots and protests against racism towards black people, mostly in police violence. The murder of George Floyd first triggered the unrest during his arrest on May 25. Shortly after his death, unrest broke out in the Minneapolis area the following day and quickly spread out across the U.S. The protests witnessed both nonviolent and violent demonstrations, which led to massive destruction of property, looting, and a police station being overrun by these protestors. Following these incidents, debates have risen contending about what differentiates between violent and nonviolent protests. This essay discusses the four different types of nonviolent direct action: protests, Noncooperation, creative solutions, and intervention.
