PART 1
Semiotic Analysis
The piece selected is a Louis Vuitton advert that offers an excellent platform for semiotic
analysis, raising questions about the denotative and connotative message displayed? What do they
contribute to the overall message? And how does the advertisement represent the commodity's
fetishism?
Advertisements are usually created to reflect values in society, and this ad is no exception.
The creator of the advert had a clear idea of the cultural code his audience was accustomed to.
He/she revealed these systems and signs to the consumers. The ad shows values that operate in
modern society and needs to reach customers regardless of the barriers present. The picture
displayed on the poster was created to act as a signifier for the product.
At first glance, the viewer is struck by the beauty and serenity of nature. Additionally, if
one were a fan of space exploration, one would realize that the female in the picture is Sally Ride,
Apollo 11. She was the first American woman to set foot in space. The guy behind her is Buzz
Aldrin, who was also on Apollo 11. He was the first person to step on the moon. The last man
standing behind him is Jim Lovell of Apollo 13 and was the flight commander.
The woman is sited on the hood of an old vehicle while the two guys stand behind the car's
door, all of them gazing at the moon. One can tell that the three are excited about their adventure
as if to recall unforgettable moments they had on the moon. They have a travel bag on the hood of
the vehicle filled with items that look like traveling stuff.
