A Minor Should not be Given a Life Sentence: Should a minor be able to get a life sentence? Here is the main source of what the essay will be about: Here is another source, you could use it if you believe it would be good for the essay. Here are my teacher's instructions: 1. Decide on a topic (crime vs punishment) 2. come up with a title and a thesis statement 3. Find a minimum of 4 sources (2 pro, 1con + 1 refute) and write this in a Harvard reference list. DO THIS BEFORE YOU START WRITING YOUR ESSAY!!!!!! 4. start writing your introduction, end with your thesis statement 5. write your first pro 6. write your con + refute. The refute should be elaborated and persuasive. 7. write your second pro 8. write your conclusion 9. write your source criticism Below here is more information (if you need it) Argumentative Essay Outline It is important that your paragraphs have a topic sentence. It is the first sentence in the paragraph, and it indicates what the paragraph is about. Introduction Your introductory paragraph sets the stage or the context for the position you are arguing for. This introduction should end with a thesis statement that provides your claim (what you are arguing for) and the reasons for your position on an issue. A. Your thesis: (the last sentences in your introduction) • states what your position on an issue is • usually appears at the end of the introduction in a short essay • should be clearly stated and often contains emphatic language (should, ought, must) Example: The production, sale, and possession of assault weapons for private citizens should be banned in the U.S. Source criticism Here is where you do an evaluation of the source’s credibility based upon the source criteria you have worked with before. This part can be short and you can evaluate more than one source at a time. • Authenticity. The source should be what it claims to be. • Relationship in time. The distance in time between the event that the source describes and the origin of the source is important from the reliability point of view. • Independence. The source should not be a copy or a summary of another source. • Freedom of tendency. The source should not be a party of anyone or anything. If the creator of the source has an interest in the case, there is a big risk that the source is biased. Body All evidence you present in this section should support your position. This is the heart of your essay. Generally, you begin with a general statement that you back up with specific details or examples. Depending on how long your argument is, you will need to devote one to two well-developed paragraphs to each reason/claim or type of evidence. Types of evidence include first-hand examples and experiential knowledge of your topic (specific examples can help your readers to connect to your topic in a way they cannot with abstract ideas). Opinions from recognized authorities. 1. Claim (pro 1) • Evidence: argue (your own words) for your opinion with facts (to back up your claim). 2. Counterargument (con) Addressing the Opposite Side Any well-written argument must anticipate and address positions in opposition to the one being argued. Pointing out what your opposition is likely to say in response to your argument shows that you have thought critically about your topic. Addressing the opposite side actually makes your argument stronger! Opposing View, what does the source say? Describe the opposing view. After this, you refute the opposing view with your own words, meaning, tell me WHY you disagree with this source. The refute needs to be strong enough to convince the reader that your con is wrong. 3. Claim: (Pro 2: your STRONGEST pro) • Evidence: argue (your own words) for your opinion with facts (to back up your claim). Conclusion The conclusion should bring the essay to a logical end. It should explain the importance of your issue in a larger context. Your conclusion should also reiterate why your topic is worth caring about. Some arguments propose solutions or make predictions on the future of the topic. Show your reader what would happen if your argument is or is not believed or acted upon as you believe it should be. Harvard reference list at the end But don’t forget to refer intext according to Harvard as well. For an A level, you need both direct and indirect in-text referencing. Reference a Website in Harvard Style | Templates & Examples () Essay outline: 1. Title, not a question but a statement 2. Your name and date 3. Introduction + thesis statement 4. Source criticism, evaluate your sources’ credibility 5. Pro 1 (with a topic sentence) 6. Con + refute (with a topic sentence) 7. Pro 2, your strongest pro (with a topic sentence) 8. Conclusion. Repeat your thesis statement 9. Harvard reference list Between 600-800 words Times New Roman 12 p 1,5 spacing This is everything you would need.
