CASE STUDY

You are the investigator at Induna Medical Supplies. A customer, Joseph Dlamini of Netforum
Medical Clinic, contacted you and informed you that the driver of the delivery van for the area,
Thulani Baloyi, had offered to sell him two boxes of personal protective equipment (PPE) for
the amount of R1 000 per box. The usual price is R1 750 per box. Thulani also informed him
that he can supply him with medical-grade face masks on a weekly basis for the same amount
since he (Thulani) gets them at a staff discount.

Tessa Naidoo, the cleaner at Induna Medical Supplies, informed you privately that Thulani and
his close friend and assistant, John Mojane, get hold of PPE and face masks before all the staff
arrive and are working with the security guard, Peter Marais. Thulani and John apparently hide
the PPE and the face masks in their lockers in the staff locker room. Tessa heard that Peter
gets R100 each time Thulani and John go to the locker room to retrieve some products and that
Peter guards the door so that no one else enters. None of the staff receive an employee
discount on any products, and Thulani and John are actually stealing products and selling them
off to unsuspecting buyers. Peter Marais, the security guard, does not inspect their private
vehicles when they leave the premises, and in this way Thulani and John get the stolen products
off the company’s property.

You appoint Mary Shosana, a tea lady at the company and a very loyal employee, as an
informer to obtain information. This information will help you to build a strong case to prosecute
the offenders and to put an end to the theft at the company.

, Rapport building consists of 5 steps (5 marks)
1 Face the • Being mindful of COVID regulations, I will sit in such a way that I am face
interviewee to face with Mr Dlamini.
• This will encourage him to pay attention to me and keep him engaged in
the conversation.
2 Make eye • I will make eye contact with Mr Dlamini, keeping my expression friendly
contact and encouraging. This is a very powerful technique that should always be
used by an investigator.
• However, I will be mindful of cultural and religious boundaries when I
study his body language. For example, he may not make eye contact
because of … .
3 Address person • I will address Mr Dlamini by his name – this will make it virtually
by her/his name impossible for him to ignore me and I will be sure that I have his attention.
4 Personal space • Being mindful of social distancing, I will maintain an acceptable

nodding encouraging him positively to communicate openly and effectively.
