United Nations - This is an international organization founded in 1945 after WW2. The goal is to help maintain peace among countries to help further each nations economy, living standards, and human rights which benefits every country. Cold War - This was a so-called war between the United States and the Soviet Union (Russia). There was no fighting between the two countries, however they were rivals and polar opposites of each other. The United States were capitalist and the Soviet Union were communist. Communism is creating a classless society and this is good for the poor because they can have equal jobs as everyone else. East and West Germany - East Germany was a part of the Communist party and under control of the Soviet Union, whereas West Germany was a democratic country and allied with other countries. East and West Berlin - East Berlin was a communist nation under control by the Soviet Union. West Berlin was a capitalist nation also known as a democracy. Iron Curtain - This was a border between the Soviet Union (Communist) and other democratic countries in Europe. This prevented any sort of transportation of people, goods, and information to cross those lines. Satellite Nations - These nationals were alliances between the Soviet Union and other countries to help control the potential threats from the west. Containment - Kennan proposed what became basic American policy throughout the Cold War: "a long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies." In Kennan's opinion, the Soviet system had major economic and political weaknesses. Truman Doctrine - Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from communist nations. Marshall Plan - The U.S. pumped billions of dollars into Western Europe to help struggling economies.
