Continuous Sound - ANS-Also referred to as a continuant sound, is a sound that can be held without distortion (e.g., /f/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /r/, /s/, /v/, /z/). Decoding - ANS-Is the ability to translate a word from print to speech, usually by employing knowledge of letter-sound relationships; also, the act of deciphering a new word by sounding it out. Diagraph - ANS-Is a group of two consecutive letters that are read as a single sound (e.g., /ea/ in bread; /ch/ in chat; /ng/ in sing). Diphthong - ANS-Is a vowel produced by the tongue shifting position during articulation. The vowel feels as if it has two parts, as the sound begins with one vowel and gradually changes to another vowel within the same syllable (e.g., ow, oy, ou, oi). Echo Reading - ANS-A more proficient reader (usually the teacher) reads a section of the text aloud, and then the student reads that same section of text aloud. Elkonin Sound Boxes - ANS-Are tools used during phonemic-awareness and encoding instruction. One box is provided for each sound in a target word.
