Letter in the viewpoint of a woman working in the women's charity organisation in An Inspector
Calls:

Dear Ophelia,

I am writing this letter to let you know about the huge scandal that had happened in the Brumley
Women’s Charity Organisation I work in. As you might’ve heard, Eva Smith was a pregnant,
former working-class woman who died a tragic death by killing herself, and now Mrs. Birling is to
blame for it, which has caused a huge scandal now. My god it drives me nuts sometimes! But
now I will have to give you my honest opinion on this.

Mrs. Birling is a dear friend of mine who is also the head of the charity I work in, whose orders I
follow. I have worked in this charity for nearly over a year now, and I feel blessed and nothing
but happiness, now knowing that we have been able to fulfil and help so many women's lives.
We are all caring and sympathetic women, when it comes to giving to the women in need and
trouble, no matter the class that they are in. Now you know me, I can be very kind to everyone
but especially as a working-class woman, I do feel under pressure at times when it comes to my
job. I have no choice but to follow Mrs. Birlings orders, or else I would get sacked immediately
like everyone else in the organisation. She was the reason I got here in the first place.
Around two weeks ago, this single, pregnant woman came up to ask for help. She was
penniless and didn’t have a husband to care for the child. However, Mrs. Birling had told us that
she was very impertinent and had a lot to say, ordering us to not help her. This is something
quite rare, but a dreadful thing that happens in our organisation, but we do as a community have
to make sure that we are really giving to the deserving poor. Mrs. Birling did seem convinced
and appalled in disappointment when she said it, making not just me, but everyone in our
organisation believe that she really was being dishonest and was a corrupt girl who didn’t
deserve the help. I have to be honest though, I did have second thoughts, because it was clear
that she was pregnant, I could tell as I have been through it twice myself, and even as she left in
sorrow, a slight urge inside of me wanted to run and collect her, but I just knew that was the
complete impossible.
It has been 2 weeks now since this happened and all of us had moved on and forgotten about it,
because as hurtful as it may have seemed, she clearly wasn’t appropriate for it. Just this
morning after this huge scandal, I have found out that she has killed herself, and I am in nothing
but utter shock. Why would a pretty lady like her kill herself in such a tragic way? The worst part
of it all is that she killed her baby as well. And it was all real.
Ever since I heard this, I haven't been able to focus and think straight, since all that is filling my
head was, was it Mrs. Birlings fault, and especially, was it my fault? People have been blaming
Mrs. Birling for her death and honestly, I partially do agree with them. What if Mrs. Birling told us
that she needed our help, and it was just a misunderstanding? What if that could’ve been the
reason she killed herself? It only happened two weeks ago, but then so much can happen in two
weeks. This makes me terrified of the future of her and especially our organisation, my job, but
what if Mrs. Birling actually deserves this?
