What is leadership?
Leadership has nothing to do with seniority, one's position in the hierarchy of a company,
achieving a certain salary level and titles, because if you are good at something it does not
mean that you are immediately a leader. Besides, it has nothing to do with personality traits
either, we don't need extroverted charms to practice leadership.
Also, management and leadership are not synonyms. Managers manage things, while
leaders manage people
As follows the way of defining according to respected business thinkers and what's wrong
with it:
- Peter Drucker: “A leader is one who has followers”.
His definition is too simple. When you are given the name of leader, it does not just
mean giving orders.
, - Warren Bennis: “Leadership is the ability to turn vision into reality”.
He forgets other people in his definition, he thinks only of his own interests.
- Bill Gates: “As we look to the next century, leaders will be the ones empowering
others”.
His definition is missing the parts about purpose or vision.
- John Maxwell: “Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less”.
He omits the source of influence. Influence does not make you a leader.
But what is leadership then? That is the process of social influence, which maximizes the
efforts of others to achieve a goal. It thus arises from social influence and does not
necessarily require others to be direct subordinates. There is also no mention of personality
traits, traits, or a title. And finally, it includes purpose, not influence.
The last thing that sets it apart from the others is that employee engagement and engaged
employees are discretionary efforts. This by challenging employees. (HAN, 2022)
