- Listeriosis: high risk for pts who eat delicatessen food, soft
cheeses, smoked seafood and get ill with diarrhea / flu symptoms.
- E. Coli: resolves in 7-10 days.
- Infectious Agent: Time between exposure and manifestation o symptoms =
incubation period.
- Colonization: presence and multiplication of infectious organisms without invading /
causing damage to tissue.
- Communicable Disease: MUST have portal of exit from the infected person, means of
transmission, portal of entry to susceptible host.
- Dehydration: foodborne illness should suspect: campylobacter. This is the most common
cause of bacteria. Foodborne illness in US/ cause of diarrheal illness. → Diarrhea / flu-like
symptoms = listeria monocytogenes. → diarrhea / fever / abd cramping after e3xposure
to raw eggs = sjpi;d administer 1 tsp salt and 8 tsp sugar into liter of clean drinking water.
→ diarrhea, cramps, bloody diarrhea after eating commercially .
- Ate a packaged salad = stage i s7-10 days
- Endemic: constant / usual prevalence of a specific disease / infectious agent within a
population / geographical aae. Ex.) Malaria
- Environment: external factors that cause / allow disease transmission. The “Where” of
the epidemiologic Triangle.
