National Awakening in Assam
The introduction of Western Education facilitated the growth of national
awareness By the end of 19th century , voice of dissent against colonial
dominance began to stir the people of Assam and several socio – cultural
organization were formed to highlight the problems and aspirations of
the common people .
1. Gyan Pradayini Sabha ( founded in 1857 by Anandaram Dhekiyal
Phukan and Gunaviram Barua)
2. Assam Literary Society ( founded in 1872 under the leadership of
Devicharan Barua and Gangagovinda Phukan)
3. Asomiya Bhasa Sadhini Sabha ( founded in 1888 by group of
Assamese Students)
4. Assam Chatra Sanmilan ( Founded in 1916 and its founder secretary
was Chandranath Sharma )
5. Ryot Sabha ( By the end of 19th century Tezpur Ryot Sabha at
Darang and Nagaon Ryot Sabha in Nawgoan were established)
, 6. Ahom Sabha / Association ( Founded in 1893 by Padmanath Gohain
Baruah .
7. Jorhat Sarbajanik Sabha ( Founded in 1884 by Jagannath Barua at
Jorhat )
8. Assam Associaion ( Founded in 1903 by Manik Chandra Baruah )
9. Assam Provincial Congress Committee ( Founded in 1921 under the
chairmanship of Chobilal Upadhyay)
Gyan Pradayini Sabha
This is one of the earliest Association founded by Anandaran Dhekiyal
Phukan in 1857. Phukhan strongly opposed the introduction of Bengali
language in schools, offices and courts in place of Assamese. This
movement for Assamese Language enentually led to the growth of
cultural regeneration in Assam . so in 1873 Assamese language was re
established .
Assam Literary Society
In order to improve Assamese language and literature , students from
Assam took the initiative and formed Assam Literary Society . It was
formed in 1872 under the leadership of Devicharan Barua and
Gangagovinda Phukan . In 1872 Jagannath Barua and Manik Chandra
Marooah on behalf of the society submitted a memorandum to the
Viceroy , Lord Northbrook to take necessary steps for the development of
natural resources of Assam and to link Assam with Bengal by railway .
