Class notes on the groups in the Periodic Table that you need to know about (group 1, group 7, group 0 and the transition metals) as well as Mendeleev. This is about half of what you need to know for the Atomic Structure and Periodic Table module for AQA GCSE Chemistry paper 1

- Metals on the left
- Non-metals on the right
- Periods tell us how many shells (the rows)
- Groups tell us how many electrons in the outer shell (the columns)

Group 1- Alkali Metals
Group 7- Halogens
Group 0- Noble Gases
Middle section - Transition metals

GROUP 1-
● Shiny
● Moderate melting/ boiling points
● Conducts electricity
● Low density as they float
● Get more reactive as you go down the group because as the atom gets bigger the
outer shell electron gets further from the nucleus and so the electrostatic forces get
weaker so the outer electron is easier to lose.

GROUP 7-
● Diatomic
● melting/boiling points increase as you go down the group because their
intermolecular forces are stronger as the molecules are getting bigger so more
energy is required to break forces
● Become less reactive the farther down the group

GROUP 0
● Inert as they already have full outer shells
● Become more dense

TRANSITION METALS
● They form ions of different charges
● They form different coloured compounds
● Used as catalysts

Mendeleev’s Periodic Table
- Ordered them in atomic weight
- He left gaps for new elements
- He predicted the elements and their properties for these gaps
- He swapped some elements because they didn’t fit in with properties
