before King” How far do you agree with this view on the context of
the years 1865 – 1968?

Agree: Civil Rights groups/organisations. These involve groups
such as NAACP, CORE, SNCC, SCLC etc
Agree: Individuals. A few examples include Ida B Wells, DuBois,
Rosa Parks, Little Rock 9 (Elizabeth Eckford for example)
Agree: King’s lack of progress in some areas and controversy
over him and his participation. Freedom Rides during his time
of prominence for example and these buses were viciously
attacked by KKK, King wasn’t on the rides.
Disagree: A lack of progress before King. White supremacy
continued well into the time of King’s prominence despite the
fight for civil rights up to this point, e.g the murder of Emmett
Till
Disagree: King made a lot of progress during his time of
prominence up until his assassination. King was involved in
Selma, the march on Washington (where he delivered his
famous “I Have a Dream” speech) for example

W.E.B. DuBois – important, unlike Booker T Washington,
DuBois was more radical and very much disagreed with
Washingtons ideas. DuBois believed in equal rights and fought
for this via involvement in the Niagara movement and by
founding (one of the founders) and leading the NAACP
Ida B Wells (1862-1931) – fought for African American Civil
Rights, specifically for women. In 1884 she filed a lawsuit
against a train car company for unfair treatment after being
thrown off first class even though she had a ticket After her
friend was lynched, she turned her attention to white mob
violence and set out to investigate several cases. Spread her
findings and enraged locals (by exposing about an 1892
lynching) who drove her out of Memphis. She continued to
fight and spread her message abroad, confronting white
women involved in suffrage who ignored lynching. “I felt that
one had better die fighting against injustice than to die like a
dog or a rat in a trap”
