1)Aluminium extractions through electrolysis
• Aluminium is gained from the electrolysis of Aluminium oxide.
• Aluminium oxide is a solid compound, which is found in a compound called bauxite which is
also a solid. Aluminium oxide is important for electrolysis because it acts as a electrolyte
(electrolyte is a substance which has the pure element which is required and is necessary
because the electricity is passed through the electrolyte).
• As Aluminium oxide is a in a solid form to use it we need to make it in molten form. We do
this by Purifying the Bauxite to get Al2O3 and then Melting the Al2O3.
• Al2O3 has a melting point of about 2000 degree Celsius, so a compound named Cryolite is
added to Al2O3 to reduce the operating temperature.
