ATI TEAS 6 Respiratory System Final Exam ratory system - ANSWER -primary function is to facilitate gas exchange b/t the body and external environment, and to provide oxygen to the body by working w/ the cardiovascular system -consists of nasal cavity, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea, lungs, bronchioles, bronchi, diaphragm, and alveolus -system of organs that oxygenate blood and release carbon dioxide respiratory system and cardiovascular system work together - ANSWER -oxygen diffuses into the body through the lungs and is disseminated throughout the body by the circulatory system to be used for cellular metabolism -carbon dioxide, the waste product of cellular metabolism, is returned to the lungs by the circulatory system, and the lungs release it to the environment pharynx - ANSWER -air passes through the pharynx -dividing point b/t the trachea and esophagus, where the throat senses the presence of food and triggers swallowing epiglottis - ANSWER -flap of cartilage that covers the entrance to the pharynx during swallowing, preventing liquids and food from entering the respiratory tract and trachea larynx - ANSWER -traveling past the epiglottis, air then passes through the larynx -ALSO called the voice box! trachea - ANSWER -the tube that carries air from the mouth and nasal cavities to the lungs -the trachea splits into 2 bronchi -ALSO known as the windpipe! bronchi - ANSWER -main passageways to the left and right lung -originating where the trachea splits, passages that carry air to the left and right lungs -as the bronchi move deeper into the lungs, the bronchi split into smaller tubes known as bronchioles -plural: bronchus bronchioles - ANSWER -terminate at the alveoli -smaller passages formed from branching of the bronchi that carry air to the alveoli alveoli - ANSWER -small sacs only one cell thick -where gas exchange occurs -the walls of the alveoli are only one cell thick to minimize distance and maximize diffusion rate
