1.1) Five prominent fields of communication
According to Integrated Organisational Communication, the five prominent fields of
communication are:
• Business Communication
This is the internal and external communication which is linked to the
establishment of state universities in the United States of America in 1863. Its
primary focus is written communication with some oral communication
incorporated. Two-way communication is emphasised with little interest of
communication between or within groups. This form of communication is aimed
at practical intervention in practise and better performance. It involves the
generation and integration of theory. Business communication further focuses
on methods and skills with a limited amount of foundation, (Angelopulo and
Thomson 2013: 15). A form of business communication often used within an
organisation is emails or electronic mails.
• Management Communication
This filed of communication takes place between the individual and groups, with
the emphasis being placed on internal communication. Management
communication focuses on intervention as well as the application of
communication theories, methods and techniques of management,
(Angelopulo and Thomson 2013: 21). It is one of the newest academic fields
that uses adaption and creation of language, symbols and signs for effectively
managing a corporate enterprise (Angelopulo and Thomson 2013: 15).
Management communication is a theory based communication that focuses on
both methods and skills. It is occasionally characterised as a coherent field of
study, however, it lacks the same amount of depth as “academic” organisational
communication, (Angelopulo and Thomson 2013: 21). A form of management
