Teaching IELTS Assignment - listening and speaking,2023. Your name: Date of submission: 4 JUNE 2023 Analyze the information in the class summary. What are your learners’ strengths and weaknesses? (max. 100 words) Overall, the students are very good at reading but lack skills in listening, speaking and writing. The average scores for listening, reading, writing and speaking are: 5.75, 6.6, 5.8, and 5,75, respectively. The students also need these exams for a variety of reasons so it is important to focus on the most useful skills. Anna struggles with listening, Bilal struggles with speaking, Chen struggles with speaking, Delphine struggles with writing, Mihai struggles with writing and Francesca struggles with listening. When taking this into consideration, the lesson skills pretty much choose themselves. Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? (minimum 150 words) The overall strength of the class is reading, so that is something that we do not need to focus on in order to increase the overall band of the class and listening and speaking are overall weaknesses. Listening is a core skill that goes hand in hand with speaking, an overall weakness in the group. Teaching both of these topics together works really well, especially when looking at the IELTS exam format and what is expected of the students in the other sections of the exam as well. Both of these skills are necessary for work, education as well as socialization. These topics are also very useful in all aspects of the IELTS exam as the students will be asked questions and will be expected to answer these questions, thus using both skills chosen. Reading can also be incorporated in the lesson to help some students work on it. 1 Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? (minimum 100 words) Work is the one topic that all of these students have in common which will make it the easiest topic to discuss in group and pair activities. It is also a topic that can be chosen in the IELTS exam, which will therefore give the students the advantage of having gone over some answers. Work, as a topic, can give students the opportunity to give opinions, and ideas as well as build a base for a common discussion. This serves as the perfect springboard for listening and speaking, as all students are from different places and could learn about jobs from around the world and make conversation and listening easier for everyone. It is one thing that almost everyone in the world will need to do at some point and is a common question for people to ask when getting to know others. The other topics can also briefly be discussed in the lesson to give the students a bit more comfort in knowing that they have gone over as many possibilities fr their IELTS exam as possible. Lesson Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to… 1. Improve listening and speaking skills 2. Communicate effectively in pairs and with the examiner 3. Participate in discussion/interview scenarios 4. Understanding questions and answering them fully 5. Cover requirements for the IELTS exam Lesson Outcomes: By the end of the lesson, students will have… 1. Participate in interview-style questions in pairs 2. Completed a listening comprehension 3. Answered and discussed questions in pairs 4. Written out the answers to discuss with the class 5. Multiple skills to cover in the lesson 2. Variety of reasons for taking the test 3. Multilingual group 4. Technological problems Suggested solutions: 1. Ensure that both skills work together 2. Find common ground for students to discuss 3. All of the students are advanced so that should not be a problem 4. Have written copies of all the content ready Stage Name Stage Aim Length of Stage (minutes) Interaction Pattern Procedure
