TORTS - A tort is an intentional or negligent civil wrong. Torts are different from crimes. Duty - Schools have a duty to protect students. There is no duty if the injury was not foreseeable. Teachers have duty to care for children in school. FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPAFederal law that protects the privacy of students‟ educational records. This law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children‟s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he/she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. FTE - Full-time equivalent. A student can be counted as 1.0 FTE for 900 hours of instruction during the school year (180 days X 5 hr/day)When referring to FTE, the state is referring to "headcount". Property taxes - Most common local source of funds Sales Tax - Primary source for funding public education.
