A Good Man Is Hard to Find
The grandmother’s character in this story is controversial. From one side, she values
things and people from her past and is trying to share her experience. However, this woman
does it in disingenuous way and with obsession. Her conservativeness and selfishness has
spoiled her. Right after her family was killed by Misfit, she said him: “You’re one of my own
children!” (O’Connor n.p.). So, she was trying to sympathize with the murderer, which is the
perfect demonstration of her hypocritical nature. The story was written shortly after the
World War II, when industry and technologies were developing rapidly. That is why
grandmother’s youth values were so different and her adoptability to the new reality was
weak.
