BOOK 8:

Evander talks about “his reign was what men call the Golden Age” actually about Saturn, but could
be reference to Augustus, could be Saturn like

Augustus was reviving the ancient cult, victory over violence is something Hercules was trying to
achieve as well as Augustus- extension of Aeneas

Evander’s “humble home” similar to Augustus

The shield: similar to one Augustus received from the senate in his reign, when Aeneas shoulders it,
it is a metaphor for founding and leading the human race. Around the edge- legends of early Rome
e.g Romulus and Remus to the civil war/end of the republic

Romulus/rape of the Sabine women (abducted Sabine women to populate Rome, attacked by the
Sabine king and the women made peace) /Mettus and Tullus (tried to betray the Romans, torn apart)

reinstate him, Cocles barred the bridge into Rome, Cloelia given as a peace treaty but escaped) /
Manlius, the sacred geese and the gauls (Gauls defeated Romans at river Allia and then attacked
Capitol, garrison woken by the geese sacred to Juno, drove off the Gauls) / the Salii (priests of Mars
named after ritual leaping dance, sacred shields guarded by them) /Luperci (priests of Lupercus,
struck married women with goatskin to ensure safe childbirth) /matrons riding in carriages (Roman
matrons offered gods and jewellery to Apollo, Senate allowed them to ride carriages and sacred
processions) /Cato in Elysium (contemporary of Julius Caesar, fought against him committed suicide
when he lost) /Catiline in Tartarus (bankrupt aristocrat, plot to march on Rome but thwarted by
Cicero, killed in battle) /battle of Actium/triumph of Augustus
