BTEC APPLIED SCIENCE UNIT 2 AIM C chromatography COMPLETED UPTO DISTINCTION. Unit 2 Aim C (chromatography) Chromatography is the observation of how components move at different rates when their mixture is separated and passed through a medium of solution or suspension. The technique is used to separate or sort out the component of mixture. Khroma is a Greek word which means color is chromatography. The process is used to identify whether a chemical substance (mixture) is pure or not. The technique has two ways of going about the entire process to identify the component within its mixture. These are stationary powder or paper and thin layer chromatography. Process of chromatography The process has two distinct phases before it gets completed; these phases are the stationary phase and the mobile phase. The stationary phase (paper chromatography) is when the paper absorbs the pigment, and the mobile phase is when the solvent is used in the process moves through the paper. The moving solvent distinguishes the proportion of the different component of the mixture dissolved. The two different substances dissolved on the paper in relative proportions are caused to move at different rates when the solvent moves across the paper. Chromatography Paper Using plant (spinach) pigment extraction The paper technique chromatography is a useful way of identifying the difference plant pigment. This experiment we had in class is to lOMoARcPSD| investigate the separation of plant (spinach) pigment of a chromatographic paper. The need the following equipment below:  Sample of spinach  Safety push pin  Toothpick  Cork  Chromagraphic paper  Pencil  Calculator  Plastic pipette  Solvent  Scissors  Plastic wrap  Alcohol (isopropyl)  Syringes (6ml)  Chromatographic solvent  Test tube rack  Sharpie markers  Genesy 20 spectrometer Precautions  Quality pencil for drawing reference line  The test tube must be covered with plastic wrap and undisturbed  Only the tip of the pa
