1. Explain the difference between counselling and psychotherapy.

Counselling deals with irrational thinking (conscious) while
psychotherapy deals with unconscious function.
Counselling deals with the past and present events while
psychotherapy deals with past events only.
Counselling deals with normal people while psychotherapy
deals with persons that have psychopathological disorder.
Counselling does not require any medication while
psychotherapy may require medication.
Counselling involves emotional exploration while psychiatry
involves mental exploration where by you take the history of
the assessing the clients experience.
In counselling we do referral for treatment where its
required while in the psychiatry clients might undergo
treatment with psychoactive drugs.
2. With brief discussion of each show 4 qualities of an effective
counsellor. (8mrks)
Listening skills: this is the the ability of the counsellor being
able to recall each and everything that the client has to say
both verbal and non-verbal’s.
Observing: this is the ability of being able to pick the
appropriate interpersonal behaviors.
Empathy: the purpose of the empathy is to make the client
feel that he is more understood and accepted.
