1.1) The following levels of skills are distinguished in South Africa: Unskilled labour,
semi-skilled labour, skilled labour and professionals.
Unskilled labor is done by a person or employee who does work that involve the
performance of easy duties, that require little to no previous experience. This
work may involve physical exertion familiarity of articles or goods. Unskilled
labour worked are usually cleaners, hospital porters and bus drivers. Training for
employees is provided by the job when they want the work to be done a certain
way or in order to maintain certain standards
Semi- skilled labour is done by a person that has obtained basic training about
the work that he needs to do or that he/she was hired for. A semi-skilled worker
is a person who does work generally of defined routine nature. The worked is not
generally penalized for the skills or judgement that he/she has. Work is given by
the employer and the employee basically just needs to get the work done. The
work is judged apon the performance of the workers (whether they get the work
done on time or not. Semi- skilled workers are usually machine operators, typists
or waiters. There are some courses that semi- skilled workers can do to improve
their work method and skills when it is required to do so by their employer.
Skilled labour requires years of training. A skilled employee is a person that is
able to work efficiently and can make decisions/ judgements on their own. A
skilled employee has a lot of responsibilities. The employee must have
comprehensive knowledge of the job that he/she was hired for. Skilled workers
are usually jewelers, electricians, secretaries and building supervisors.
Professionals are people that have high qualifications in the industry that they
work in. Professionals are people such as university lecturers, lawyers, doctors,
teachers that engineers.
