Logical behaviourism – Ryle (1900 – 1976)
Logical behaviourists define the mind in terms of behaviour.
‘Para-mechanical hypothesis’ – the idea that intelligent behaviour is characterized by its
specific causal origin (the mind controls intelligent behaviour, but not non-intelligent
behaviour)
- Behaviour and the mind are merely causally connected. The mind controls behaviour,
causally, but behaviour is not part of the mind.
Ryle’s aim is to attack the para-mechanical hypothesis the Cartesian conception of the
mind is nonsensical and that behaviour is an integral part of our concept of the mind.
Oftewel, behaviourists bestuderen ook de mind, maar dat doen ze door gedrag te meten.
Volgens hen is dit namelijk gelijk aan elkaar.
Ryle geloofde ook in dispositions (specific behavioural tendencies), als ik dorst heb ga ik
drinken.
Kritiek tegen logical behaviourism:
Je gedrag is niet per se je mentale staat. Denk aan de volgende twee voorbeelden:
- Een actrice die heel erg goed pijn kan naspelen, maar zelf geen pijn heeft
- Iemand die in pijn is, maar goed getraind is om dit niet te laten zien aan de omgeving.
Antwoord van logical behaviourists: deze situaties zijn niet echt, onder extreme
omstandigheden zullen ook deze personen zich zo gedragen dat je kan zien of ze pijn
hebben of niet.
“Mental holism” – hetzelfde soort gedrag kan een resultaat zijn van verschillende
netwerken van mentale staten (denk aan de dispositions van Ryle, als ik dorst heb ga
ik drinken dit hoeft dus niet zo te zijn).
De verbinding tussen mind en het lichaam is niet causaal maar conceptueel (denk aan
niet-intelligent gedrag).
Let op! Er is ook nog een ander soort behaviourism van Watson, deze is niet hetzelfde als die
van Ryle.

Brain research shows more and more that the mind is manipulated only if and only insofar as
the mind is manipulated.
The mind = the brain
There are two kinds of the identity theory:
Type-identity theory (type = class / category)
Every mental state of a specific type is identical to a brain state of a specific type.
Example: everyone who believes Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands shares
a mental state. If this would be true, we could read minds by determining their brain
states
Kritiek op type-identity theory:
Different kinds of minds appear able to realize the same kinds of mental states,
‘multiple realization’
Antwoord van type-identity theory: met een ander brein heb je toch net een andere
experience
Token-identity theory (eigenlijk type-identity theory, maar dan zo veranderd dat het
wel kan met multiple realization. Token = an individual object of entity that belongs
to a class or category)
Every token of a mental state-type is identical with a token of a brain state-type so
multiple realization can be true
Kritiek op token-identity theory
How can tokens of different brain state-types be identical with tokens of the very
same mental state type.
Volgens de identity theory moeten we stoppen met het afvragen van “waarom?”. Sommige
dingen zijn namelijk gewoon zo, net zoals dat water ‘gewoon’ H2O is. MAAR, veel
eigenschappen van water kan je uitleggen aan de hand van H2O (bevriezen, koken, mengen),
maar dit kan niet met de identity theory en de mind-brain identificatie.
