In this task, I am going to discuss the importance for food retailers of meeting their social,
ethical, environmental and corporate social responsibilities. I will also evaluate how selected
retailers have met those responsibilities. The organisations that I will analyse will be Tesco
and McDonalds.
McDonalds is the world’s most famous fast food restaurant. The
company began in 1940 with their headquarters located in United
States. It is a large scale business as it serves around 68 million
customers daily, is located in 119 countries with more than 35,000
outlets and still growing rapidly. It specialises in hamburgers, with
many other products to offer to consumers. McDonalds is recognised
not only for fast food, but also for their good customer relationship
which has earned them a positive reputation in the market. McDonalds tends to adapt to the
local culture enabling them to grow their social network as well as help the business to earn
profit. Another reason for McDonalds being recognised as a large scale business is due to
their employment rate. There are 91,500 employees annually and McDonalds invest 43
Million on staff training and development.

McDonalds
Ethical
McDonald’s has been effective by following the Code of Conduct, because in that way
employees in third world countries are not oppressed, instead they will be provided safe
working conditions. In 2011, McDonald’s set a goal of requiring all of their suppliers of palm
oil to become members of RSPO by the end of 2011, and they met this goal. McDonald’s has
also been effective as it has set a milestone of using only certified sustainable palm oil in
restaurants and for par-fry for chicken and potato products.

Social
McDonalds has been effective in terms of employment, as by opening new stores all over the
world, during the year 2013 it has employed 91,500 people across the United Kingdom. This
has positively affected the economy and helped unemployed people. McDonald’s has been
effective by collaborating with its Charity RMHC US. This is because every day, more than
20,000 families benefit from RMHC programs around the world. Annually, RMHC impacts
the lives of 7 million children and their families.

Environmental

McDonald’s has been effective in using environmental friendly logistics, in fact, McDonald’s
Distributor Council, for instance, has reduced travel by 1.25 million kilometers per year,
saving an estimated 503,459liters of diesel. More than 25,000 liters of used cooking oil are
being collected from McDonald’s approximately 108 restaurants each month and converted
into biodiesel. Moreover, the energy and water efficiencies in their standard restaurant
