Healthcare Management Capstone – C439: Task 2 (Executive Summary) 1. Summary of the opportunity (i.e., what the problem is, why it is a problem, and why it should be fixed): Our current paper charting system is a problem. Paper charts are very time consuming to utilize. Flipping through pages of physician notes to find a patient history, scanning through chart pages to find lab results, and trying to find and then decipher written physician orders; this all takes up an immense amount of time. Illegible physician orders create a very inefficient work environment. When staff cannot read physician writing, they must call the physician office to verify the order. Illegible written orders could also cause technologist to perform the incorrect exam on a patient, thus causing harm. The current ordering system allows for duplicate orders on patients who see multiple doctors. If the ordering provider does not look through the chart thoroughly enough, they could order an exam that another provider previously ordered. All the above-mentioned issues raise concern for patient safety and an increase in medical expenses. 2. Identification of all internal stakeholders who would be involved in this organizational initiative: Administration (particularly the CEO and CFO), upper management, clinical staff, non-clinical staff, and the IT department are all internal stakeholders that should be involved in this initiative. 3. Justification of why the internal stakeholders should be involved: Budgeting for the initiative would be the responsibility of the CFO. Choosing the best vendor to fit our hospitals needs would fall on administration, upper management, and the IT department.
