1. The poster shows a smiling soldier holding up what is presumably a cup with food that
was shipped to the battlefield. It also shows the ‘situation’ that occurred during the
devastating shortages of food during the war. Food was in short supply as the majority of
processed and canned foods were shipped overseas to the soldiers and allied soldiers.
Due to these shortages the American government introduced a system of rationing that
would distribute scarce foods. Each citizen was given a series of ration books containing
various types of removable stamps (for sugar, meat, oil, canned goods) and once a
person’s stamps were used up for the month they could no longer purchase any more of
these types of food. That is the situation depicted by the poster.

2. The poster’s message is fairly direct however it definitely promotes the system of
rationing and implies that everyday citizens should ‘do with less’ (give up the luxury
of having an unlimited supply of goods) so that the soldiers will have enough to get
by. The propagandist hopes to encourage the receiver that the rationing system is
just (‘rationing gives you your fair share’) and that having an unlimited supply of
goods when soldiers are in need is unfair (everyone should have their ‘fair’ share).
The propagandist is definitely in favor of the rationing system and aims to convince
the general public that they should not protest about having to get by with less since
the soldiers are more in need of the same goods.

3. The emotions depicted by the poster are generally positive. The colors are bright and
the soldier is smiling. The soldier is smiling because he’s satisfied with the rationing
system. He appears to be not only happy but also healthy (due to the fact that he
